He and Harriet Constance Church were divorced about 1943 The story goes that Aunt Connie had "little John" and then was put in an asylum (I'm guessing she had post partem depression). She was in the asylum for two years. During that time her husband, John divorced her and took "little John". This made Aunt Connie so very sad. She never got to raise him.³

Aunt Connie apparently suffered some sort of emotional problem after having her first and only child, John. My guess is that she might have had a severe case of post partem blues, but they didn't know how to treat it very well back during the 1940's and 50's. So she was sent to a mental asylum for about two years. While she was in there, her husband John Gardner, divorced her and raised their child. He never allowed Aunt Connie to become part of their child's life. This really hurt Aunt Connie. Much later in life Aunt Connie contacted her son John and established a relationship.
