I sent this to you and Steve Smith tonight:
Yesterday, I was looking through old photos and found a print of my grandfather Henry Neel (1886-1976) at age 13 that my Dad had copied. I don’t have the original but it must have been one of those old fair photos that are joined together because I had written on the back: “Other half of picture (not this one) Smith – 1) John m. May Neel; 2) Bill; 3) Elmer; 4) Charlie (in picture); 5) Leo (youngest). 2 of them worked in Medina, got homesick, walked rails home back in one weekend. Lived on William St next to Grandpa’s.” I don’t remember writing this at all or whether I was talking to Grandpa in the 1970s or somebody else. My assumption is that these are brothers of John Smith. Last night, some of the family got together for dinner at the Pizza House and I read this to Uncle Doyle Neel (age 92) and the names were not familiar to him at all, but he said that his Uncle John & May Smith did live on William Street for awhile next to Henry Neel’s. He had not heard any stories about anyone walking to Medina.
Today I went to the computer, concentrated on the name Leo, and found this family. I’m sure this is John Smith’s family. Mary Iona Smith’s birth record (4 Dec 1897) filed at the Lorain County Probate Court indicates that she had been born in Chariton Co MO, so this fits.
1910 Bowling Green Twp., Chariton Co MO, p. 11A:
Ralph Smith 66 IN/IN/IN Farmer – married 49 years
Susan Smith 64 WI/OH/OH – married 49 years; 12 children, 7 living
Leo Smith 19 son MO/IN/WI
Neighbors, Charles Steinman and Charles Meyer
1900 Brunswick Twp., Chariton Co MO, p. 43A:
Ralph S. Smith, born May 1844 IN/VA/IN Farmer
Susan M. Smith, wife, born Jan 1846 WI/OH/OH, married 38 years, 12 children, 7 living
William M. Smith, son, born Feb 1872 IA/IN/WI Farmer – married 5 years
Ida L. Smith, dau in law, born Nov 1877 IN/IN/IN – married 5 years; 2 children, 1 living
Elmer J. Smith, son, born Apr 1883 MO/IN/WI
Charles O. Smith, son, born Jul 1886 MO/IN/WI
Sherman L. Smith, son, born Aug 1889 MO/IN/WI [This must be Leo]
Susan V. Smith, granddaughter, born Jan 1900 MO/IA/IN
Neighbors, Thomas A. Pryor and John Sturm
1880 Jackson Twp., Newton Co AR, p. 600D:

[This census taker was not very complete.]
I cannot find the family for certain in the 1870 census. Missouri or Iowa would be most likely. There was a family in Rock Elm Twp., Pierce Co WI, p. 384B, very hard to read, John Smith 35, Celinda 34, Mary 6, Frederick 4, John 2, Amelia ½. Not close enough to say for sure.
There is a marriage in Wisconsin that might fit – Ralph P. Smith to Susan M. Long, 8 Dec 1863 LaCrosse WI.
If you do a search in Google for the above couple, an ancestor chart comes up on http://www.facebook.com/l/2AQFfKS9DAQHOghv4SMR7TFuOSW_rgaRQ_VlwJwzPH3WcQQ/www.spiddyskids.comI don’t see any contact information but it might be done by a T. A. Painter. This person says that Ralph S. Smith, was born 28 May 1844 in Indiana, probably St. Joseph Co IN, to George W. Smith and Elizabeth Case; and died 13 July 1914 in Henrietta, Ray Co MO – death certificate on FamilySearch. He was buried at Keytesville, Chariton Co MO. It says he was married 8 Dec 1863 in Lafayette Co WI to Susan M. Long, born Jan 1846 WI; died before 1914. The Smith line does not continue back from George W. Smith on this chart, but the Case line goes back several generations on several branches. I’m not finding any family group sheets with children but they might be there.
You’ll have to explore this further to see if this all fits.
